LEGION BRANCH EDUCATIONAL BURSARIES

LOCAL BRANCH BURSARIES

Educational bursaries are available from the Branch Poppy Trust Fund to the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Veterans who need financial assistance to pursue a post-secondary education (college, technical school, university).

Students may apply each year they attend a post-secondary institution.  The bursaries are provided from the Branch Poppy Funds, which are held "in trust" so their dispersal's are strictly controlled and must meet the requirements set out in the Legion Poppy Manual.

To apply please provide the following information to the Branch:

  • Name of student requesting the bursary.
  • Name of post-secondary institution and program/courses the student is entering.
  • Proof of post-secondary institution registration (i.e. not a conditional acceptance, but proof that the student is actually registered in the program)
  • Name, rank and service number of the Veteran the student is applying under, along with their relationship to the student.

The above information may be dropped off at the Branch, mailed, or emailed:

Mailing/Street Address:

100-215 McLeod Avenue, Spruce Grove, AB. T7X 0G2

Email Address:

rclbranch281@gmail.com

  • The Poppy Fund Assistance Form (Mean's Test) must also be completed but should not be emailed to the Branch due to the amount of personal information required - see attached form below.

Bursary approval steps:

  • Once all required information for the bursary request is received, the Branch Poppy Chair presents the bursary request to the Branch general membership at a General Meeting for approval. The Meetings are held the 4th Wednesday of January, March, May, June, September, and November.
  • Assuming it is approved, the Branch completes a "Poppy Fund Disbursement Form" and submits it, with a copy of the General Meeting Minutes approving the request, to the AB-NWT Command (provincial headquarters) for their review & approval.
  • AB-NWT Command must approve the request before the bursary can be provided.
  • Once approval is received from Command the student is notified and asked to come into the Branch to receive the bursary, during a General Meeting or a Saturday afternoon Meat Draw if possible.

Please note that all Legion members are volunteers so these activities take place in their spare time.
